Is value investing still profitable?
Value investing has been used by many investors, in conjunction with other investment considerations, to profit over long periods. Is value investing still relevant? Yes—and here are some tips on how to do it successfully: Value stocks are generally good bargains, but not all bargain stocks offer good value.
The Morningstar US Value Index returned 12% in 2023. That's pretty disappointing compared with the 26.5% returns from the Morningstar US Market Index, which tracks stocks in every category, and the 38.5% returns on growth stocks.
Much is made of Warren Buffett's conversion from his early days as a deep-value investor along the lines of his mentor Benjamin Graham to one who appreciates growth stocks. But Buffett remains a value investor at heart, and rarely pays up for stocks or businesses at Berkshire Hathaway (ticker: BRKb).
It's far, far too early to suggest that the value premium is dead. It's true that the last 15 years, and particularly the last seven, have seen disappointing returns relative to growth. But nothing lasts forever in investing. Give up on value now, and you may well regret it when the next major rotation occurs.
All it takes to make money with a value stock is for enough other investors to realize there's a mismatch between the stock's current price and what it's actually worth. Once that happens, the share price should go up to reflect the higher intrinsic value. Then those who bought in at a discount will get their profit.
Bottom line: We prefer cyclicals and value in the first half as markets price in a second half recovery, but in the second half of the year, a return to trend growth rates and falling interest rates could benefit technology and growth stocks.
Looking back at the recessions of 1980, 1982, 1991, 2001, and 2009, we find growth tends to outperform value in the 12 months prior to a recession through to the trough of the recession. As the economy exits a recession, value tends to outperform growth.

Buffett is one of the world's most generous philanthropists.
He pledged in 2006 to donate about 85% of his nearly 475,000 Berkshire Class A shares to five foundations: the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (named for his late wife), and three foundations run by his three children.

Why are value stocks underperforming?
Our analysis considers these arguments and concludes they have merit, but our research suggests that four key factors drove the underperformance of value and the outperformance of growth over the past decade: inflation, real interest rates, the corporate profits growth rate and equity market volatility.
Mordy also added stock picking is a status quo, and people may be reluctant to move away from it. On the flip side, Andrea Horan, portfolio manager, Agilith Capital Inc., argued stock picking as a strategy is not dead, but it's not easy either—not everyone can be a winner.
Small company value stocks have been a solid leading investment over the long run, and we believe that trend will continue. Based on our analysis, we find compelling reasons why deploying capital to small company value stocks will be a successful long-term strategy and is a prudent choice now.

Intrinsic Values Can be Difficult to Estimate. Probably the biggest downside of value investing is the challenge of accurately estimating a company's intrinsic value.
Value investors often make decisions similar to what Ben Graham did, based on the business looking cheap, but Rule One investors know that it is better to buy a wonderful business at a fair price than a fair business at a wonderful price.
2024 could easily turn into the year that value stocks come out on top. Though “official” numbers say differently, there's a clear sense of unease as tech-heavy indices soar to all-time highs despite wide-ranging layoffs pointing to troubled economic conditions.
As a whole, analysts are optimistic about the outlook for stock prices in 2024. The consensus analyst price target for the S&P 500 is 5,090, suggesting roughly 8.5% upside from current levels.
Over the three-year trailing period, value stocks have also seen a 14% average annual return, far ahead of the 3.3% average annual return for growth-oriented names. During this period, small-value stocks led the Morningstar Style Box with an average annual return of 18.1%.
A common perception is that value stocks are more cyclical and therefore more vulnerable to economic downturn. We find that this conventional wisdom is false: empirical evidence shows that value stocks actually tend to outperform in recessions.
Should I cash out my stocks in a recession?
Bonds and cash have historically outperformed most stocks during recessions. Selling stocks in favor of bonds and cash before a recession may leave you unprepared if stocks bounce back before the economy does, which has happened historically during many recessions.
— Warren Buffet's three-step prioritization strategy involves writing down 25 goals, selecting the top five, and focusing solely on those. What is the 80/20 rule? — The 80/20 rule states that 80% of desired results come from 20% of efforts, emphasizing the importance of working smart rather than just working hard.
What Is a 70/30 Portfolio? A 70/30 portfolio is an investment portfolio where 70% of investment capital is allocated to stocks and 30% to fixed-income securities, primarily bonds. Any portfolio can be broken down into different percentages this way, such as 80/20 or 60/40.
Warren Buffet's 2013 letter explains the 90/10 rule—put 90% of assets in S&P 500 index funds and the other 10% in short-term government bonds.
Warren Buffett drives a Cadillac XTS, a car that is far from the flashy, high-end luxury vehicles that one might expect a billionaire to own. Consistent with his down-to-earth lifestyle, Buffett's choice of vehicle is practical, reliable, and understated.
