The stock market now?
Year-to-date (YTD) performance refers to the change in price since the first day of the current year. For example, if a stock ends the previous calendar year trading for $50 per share and is worth $60 at the end of June, the return (assuming the stock paid no dividends) is $10 or 20%.

The term stock market crash refers to a sudden and substantial drop in stock prices. Stock market crashes are often the result of several economic factors, including speculation, panic selling, or economic bubbles. They may occur amid the fallout of an economic crisis or major catastrophic event.
Buying stock FAQs
Buying stocks right now is a great decision for long-term investors. While the stock market fluctuates up and down over the short run, it's consistently increased in value over the long run. There's no better time to invest than right now.
Stock market investments in the US are protected under the Securities Investor Protection Act (SIPA) and overlooked by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). SIPC was created under the SIPA as a non-profit membership corporation.
If more people want to buy a stock (demand) than sell it (supply), then the price moves up. Conversely, if more people wanted to sell a stock than buy it, there would be greater supply than demand, and the price would fall. Understanding supply and demand is easy.
AltIndex – We found that AltIndex is the most accurate stock predictor for 2024. Unlike other providers in this space, AltIndex relies on alternative data points, such as social media sentiment and website analytics. It also uses artificial intelligence to convert its findings into risk-averse stock picks.

What is the year to date total return?
To calculate the YTD return, subtract the starting period value from the current period value, and divide the resulting figure by the starting year value. In the final step, multiply the figure in decimal notation by 100 to convert the YTD figure into a percentage.

S&P 500 3 Year Return is at 26.99%, compared to 26.13% last month and 18.84% last year.
Most major indexes were able to erase their losses from a dismal 2022. Smaller company stocks had a late rally, but managed to erase the bulk of their losses from last year. The Russell 2000 index finished 2023 with a 15.1% gain after falling 21.6% in 2022.
While many analysts think the market could well climb in 2024, they're not fully discounting the possibility of a downturn either. As with the start of 2023, market watchers remain divided on the state of the market in the year ahead, as so many variables work to confound predictions.
Stock Calls Fall Short as S&P 500 Has Runaway Year
7 Wells Fargo got closer, forecasting a target range of 12% to 17% growth for year-end 2023. The market never hit the early lows Comerica forecast, causing their year-end prediction of about 10% growth to fall short.
Once you cash out a stock that's dropped in price, you move from a paper loss to an actual loss. Cash doesn't grow in value; in fact, inflation erodes its purchasing power over time. Cashing out after the market tanks means that you bought high and are selling low—the world's worst investment strategy.
As a whole, analysts are optimistic about the outlook for stock prices in 2024. The consensus analyst price target for the S&P 500 is 5,090, suggesting roughly 8.5% upside from current levels.
Some traders follow something called the "10 a.m. rule." The stock market opens for trading at 9:30 a.m., and the time between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. often has significant trading volume. Traders that follow the 10 a.m. rule think a stock's price trajectory is relatively set for the day by the end of that half-hour.
It typically takes five months to reach the “bottom” of a correction. However, once the market starts to turn, it can recover quickly. The average recovery time for a correction is just four months! That's why investors with truly diversified portfolios may consider staying investing for the long-term.
What is the safest thing to invest in the stock market?
Safe assets are those that allow investors to preserve capital without a high risk of potential losses. Such assets include treasuries, CDs, money market funds, and annuities. There is, of course, a risk-return tradeoff, such that safer assets typically offer comparatively lower expected returns.
Monday is probably the best day to trade stocks, since there is likely considerable volatility pent up over the weekend. That said, Friday can also be a good day to trade, as investors make moves to prepare their portfolios for a couple of days off. The middle of the week tends to be the least volatile.
Having little or no patience
Ultimately, many people lose money in the stock market because they simply can't wait long enough for meaningful profits to arrive. History shows that the longer you remain invested (in diversified stocks) the less chance you have of losing money in the stock market.
But there's one group of investors who charge in to buy when stocks are selling off: the corporate insiders. How do they do it? They have 2 key advantages over you and me that provide them the edge during uncertain times. If you follow their lead, you can have that edge too.
Analysts underscored that weak Q3 earnings of IT and banking majors have triggered a selloff in these stocks. Apart from the above three factors, persisting geopolitical tensions and some caution ahead of the Interim Budget are also among the factors that are weighing on domestic market sentiment.
