Is 4.75 interest rate good or bad?
Is 4.75% a good interest rate for a mortgage? Currently, yes—4.75% is a good interest rate for a mortgage. While mortgage rates fluctuate so often—which can affect the definition of a good interest rate for a mortgage—4.75% is lower than the current average for both a 15-year fixed loan and a 30-year mortgage.
(Real-estate taxes, private mortgage insurance, and homeowners insurance are additional and not included in this figure.) The 4.5% annual interest rate translates into a monthly interest rate of 0.375% (4.5% divided by 12). So, you'll pay 0.375% interest each month on your outstanding loan balance.
A good personal loan interest rate depends on your credit score: 740 and above: Below 8% (look for loans for excellent credit) 670 to 739: Around 14% (look for loans for good credit) 580 to 669: Around 18% (look for loans for fair credit)
Higher mortgage rates have created a so-called golden handcuff effect. Nearly 82% of homeowners feel “locked-in” by their existing low-rate mortgage, according to data from Realtor.com. But there is a tipping point, recent reports show — and 5.5% is the “magic” number.
A high-interest loan is one with an annual percentage rate above 36% that can be tough to repay. You may have cheaper options. Annie Millerbernd is a NerdWallet authority on personal loans.
The average ranges from 3% to 4.5% for new cars—partly because new car buyers tend to have better-than-average credit.
Savings accounts that earn more than 4% annual percentage yield are high-yield, meaning they help your money grow faster than an average savings account. The products featured on this page are some of the top options that earn APYs of at least 4%.
Generally, what's considered a bad interest rate is anything higher than 10%. Ideally, you want to get an interest rate that's below 5% — but with little or bad credit, that can be harder to achieve.
After its December 2023 meeting, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) predicted making three quarter-point cuts by the end of 2024 to lower the federal funds rate to 4.6%. Inflation has started to recede, but the committee has signaled it wants to see more positive data before pulling the trigger.
Compared to where rates were just a couple of years ago, a 7% mortgage rate is extremely high. But now, many borrowers who got their mortgage in the last year likely have rates of 7% or higher. Depending on your score, you may get a rate in the 7% range right now. Are 8% mortgage rates coming?
Will mortgage rates ever go back down to 3?
Sure, mortgage rates could fall to 3% at some point, but chances are that's not going to happen anytime soon. Moreover, waiting for rates to drop before you buy your home could backfire. Instead, consider buying your house now and refinancing your mortgage when rates improve.
"While a one- to two-percentage-point decrease from their peak could be reasonable, I wouldn't expect a fall back toward the 3% 30-year fixed rate mortgage any time soon," says Jonathan Ernest, assistant professor of economics at Case Western Reserve University.
The 30-year fixed mortgage rate is expected to fall to the low-6% range through the end of 2024, dipping into high-5% territory by early 2025. Here's where mortgage interest rates are headed for the rest of the year and how that will impact the housing market as a whole.
Mortgage rates are currently expected to continue trending down through 2024 and into 2025. The Mortgage Bankers Association thinks that 30-year mortgage rates could fall to 5.5% in 2025.
Aspiring homeowners put off by current mortgage rates can still find newly built homes that come with a 4% mortgage rate, one real-estate expert says. With the 30-year mortgage averaging 7.76% as of Nov. 2, many home buyers find that borrowing costs — and high home prices — make it too expensive to purchase a home.
Increasing your income, paying down debts, and boosting your credit score can all help lower your risk as a borrower and qualify you for a lower mortgage rate. You can also save up for a larger down payment, as it means the lender has less cash on the line. "Mortgage pricing is all about risk," Sanford says.
Car Loan APRs by Credit Score
Excellent (750 - 850): 2.96 percent for new, 3.68 percent for used. Good (700 - 749): 4.03 percent for new, 5.53 percent for used. Fair (650 - 699): 6.75 percent for new, 10.33 percent for used. Poor (450 - 649): 12.84 percent for new, 20.43 percent for used.
An interest rate under 5% is a great rate for a 72-month auto loan. However, the best loan offers are only available to borrowers who have the best credit scores and payment histories.
Credit Score Range | New Car Loan Rates | Used Car Loan Rates |
---|---|---|
781 to 850 | 5.64% | 7.66% |
661 to 780 | 7.01% | 9.73% |
601 to 660 | 9.60% | 14.12% |
501 to 600 | 12.28% | 18.89% |
CDs can help accelerate your savings, but they're not always worth it. If there's a chance you'll need access to your money during your CD's term, consider a high-yield savings account or money market account. But if you have a pool of money you can afford to lock up, it may be worth capitalizing on high CD rates.
Should I open a savings account or keep cash?
The recommended amount of cash to keep in savings for emergencies is three to six months' worth of living expenses. If you have funds you won't need within the next five years, you may want to consider moving it out of savings and investing it.
No financial institutions currently offer 7% interest savings accounts. But some smaller banks and regional credit unions are currently paying more than 6.00% APY on savings accounts and up to 9.00% APY on checking accounts, though these accounts have restrictions and requirements.
Although ranges vary depending on the credit scoring model, generally credit scores from 580 to 669 are considered fair; 670 to 739 are considered good; 740 to 799 are considered very good; and 800 and up are considered excellent.
On Thursday, March 21, 2024, the current average interest rate for the benchmark 30-year fixed mortgage is 6.90%, unchanged since the same time last week. If you're looking to refinance, the national 30-year fixed refinance interest rate is 6.85%, up 1 basis point from a week ago.
It's possible to get approved for an auto loan if you have bad credit (sometimes called "deep subprime" credit), meaning a credit score under 580. But in many cases, options can be costly.
