How many Americans have $10,000 in the bank?

About 29% of respondents have between $501 and $5,000 in their savings accounts, while the remaining 21% of Americans have $5,001 or more. Few hold much cash in their checking accounts as well. Of those surveyed, 60% report having $500 or less in their checking accounts, while only about 12% have $2,001 or more.
A stunning new Bankrate survey of 1,030 individuals finds that more than half of American adults (56%) lack sufficient savings to shoulder an unexpected $1,000 expense.

So, the average savings is the number at which half of all money saved is above this amount and half of all money saved is below it. According to the Federal Reserve, households between the ages of 55 and 64 have the following median assets: Retirement Accounts – $185,000. Other Financial Assets – $67,700.

This average is skewed by people holding high balances, so it might be better to look at the survey's median balance figure, which is $5,300.
How many people have $10000 in the bank?
18% said their saving were at least $1000 but under $10,000, while 11% each had $10,000 to $49,999 and $50,000 or more saved up. A substantial share of respondents—17%—preferred not to answer.
Personal Savings in the U.S.
This is about as many people as those who volunteered to give answers about the status of their savings and had more than $1,000 in the bank. 18 percent said their saving were at least $1000 but under $10,000, while 11 percent each had $10,000 to $49,999 and $50,000 or more saved up.
The national average for retirement savings varies depending on age, but according to the Economic Policy Institute, the median retirement savings for all working age households in the US is around $95,776.
A 2023 survey conducted by Payroll.org highlighted that 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, a 6% increase from the previous year. In other words, more than three-quarters of Americans struggle to save or invest after paying for their monthly expenses.
Also, nearly one in four (22 percent) U.S. adults said they have no emergency savings. Despite economic challenges, the percentage remains relatively unchanged year-over-year. In 2022, 23 percent of Americans had no emergency savings.
Other answers revealed that 15 percent had between $1,000 to $5,000, 10 percent with savings of $5,000 to $10,000, 13 percent boasted $10,000 to $20,000 of cash in their bank accounts while 20 percent had more than $20,000.
There are different rules of thumb you can apply to come up with an ideal net worth calculation. For example, one rule suggests having a net worth at 70 that's equivalent to 20 times your annual expenses. If you spend $100,000 a year to live in retirement, you should have a net worth of at least $2 million.

Average weekly earnings reached $1,142, while the average American made $4,949 per month in Q4 of 2023.

Banks report cash deposits totaling $10,000 or more
Banks have to report any deposits above $10,000 to the IRS on a form known as the Currency Transaction Report. Yes -- even if it's only $10,000.01. It's not just deposits, either. Banks are required to report any transaction of over $10,000, including withdrawals.
