How big is the Chinese sovereign wealth fund?
The CIC is the one of the world's largest sovereign wealth fund, with more than $1.3 trillion in assets under management and major investments around the globe.
China's $1.24 trillion sovereign wealth fund vowed to help with risk mitigation and market stabilization in 2024, the latest sign of state companies playing a bigger role in bolstering the nation's ailing stock market.
Norway's sovereign wealth fund, the world's largest, was established in the 1990s to invest the surplus revenues of the country's oil and gas sector. To date, the fund has put money in more than 8,500 companies in 70 countries around the world.
China is home to one of the world's largest sovereign funds, China Investment Corporation. CIC's total assets under management reached about $1.24 trillion at the end of 2022, bigger than Saudi Arabia's 2022 GDP (about $1.1 trillion). Saudi Arabia was the 17th largest economy in the world in 2022.
The size of the fund and the scope of its spending spree – assets are nearly $800 billion – has made the PIF both a force for modernizing Saudi Arabia and a tool for so-called soft power on the global stage.
Despite billions in Chinese development funding, Pakistan has struggled economically, barely escaping collapse this year. Islamabad now owes China more than $67 billion which equals 19.6% of its economy.

What is China's big fund?
The China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund (ICF; Chinese: 国家集成电路产业投资基金; pinyin: Guójiā Jíchéng Diànlù Chǎnyè Tóuzī Jījīn), also known as the National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund and the Big Fund (Chinese: 国家大基金; pinyin: Guójiā Dàjījīn), is a China Government Guidance Fund.
Cities and provinces across the country have accumulated a massive amount of hidden debt following years of unchecked borrowing and spending. The International Monetary Fund and Wall Street banks estimate that the total outstanding off-balance-sheet government debt is around $7 trillion to $11 trillion.
As of February 2024, China's foreign exchange reserves totaled US$3.225 trillion, which is the highest foreign exchange reserves of any country. The management of foreign exchange reserves is governed by the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) and the People's Bank of China.
Some estimates of the royal family's wealth measure their net worth at $1.4 trillion. This figure includes the market capitalization of Saudi Aramco, the state oil and gas company, and its vast assets in fossil fuel reserves, making them the wealthiest family in the world and the wealthiest in recorded history.
The fund disclosed the stakes in a regulatory filing Friday afternoon. The PIF bought more than 5 million shares in Disney, which it valued at just under $500 million, and more than 3 million shares in Facebook for $520 million.
Saudi Arabia's ruling royal family has a net worth of about $1.4 trillion, which is 16 times more than that of the British royal family.
China owns 384,000 acres of American agricultural land. That's a 30% increase just since 2019. And on top of that, they own land near an air force base in North Dakota.
In fact, very much like Norway, Singapore has more assets than debt. Which means that de facto the Singaporean government has no net debt. And what is more impressive, without the vast natural resources Singapore has. This is a privileged situation to be in, but Singaporeans have earned that privilege.
The total debt is nearly $34 trillion, but changes somewhat depending on how you calculate it. And about a third, or 30%, of the publicly held national debt is owned by foreign countries and foreign investors. The biggest foreign holder of U.S. debt is Japan, followed by China.
If China “dumped” USA treasuries, they would take a serious monetary loss. The price of the treasuries would drop, effective raising the return for those who bought the bonds.
What happens if China calls in U.S. debt?
Consequences of Owing Debt to the Chinese
If China called in all of its U.S. holdings, the U.S. dollar would depreciate, whereas the yuan would appreciate, making Chinese goods more expensive.
According to Bloomberg, the pace of US asset sales by investors in China led some on Wall Street to theorize that officials in Beijing were looking for way to further prop up the weakening yuan, selling US bonds to increase their store of dollars that can be used to intervene to boost the currency.
