Does Canada still give money to the monarchy?
Absolutely none. The Canadian government does not give any money to the Royal family and the total amount that they spend on things associated with the royal family including paying the governor general's salary and the staff for the governor general amounts to about a dollar a year for each Canadian.
“We don't pay any money to the Royal Family,” says Robert Finch, dominion chairman at the Monarchist League of Canada. The Monarchist League of Canada is an organization at the forefront of the promotion, education, and non-partisan defence of the Canadian Crown.
The official expenditure by the monarchy was £107.5 million – a rise of five per cent from £102.4 million in 2021-2022. The cost per person in the UK of funding the total sovereign grant was £1.29 – which had not changed since last year.
Despite 69 per cent of respondents having a "mostly favourable" opinion of Queen Elizabeth II as a person, 33 per cent preferred Canada to remain a monarchy; 36 per cent said they would prefer to have an elected head of state, 21 per cent were indifferent, and 11 per cent were unsure.
Why is Queen Elizabeth on Canadian currency? Because she's Queen of Canada. Canada remains in personal union with the United Kingdom. She's also Queen of Australia, New Zealand, and several other Commonwealth Realms.
They don't pay taxes directly to Britain, but the Canadian Taxpayer does pay for the Monarchy's “presence” in Canada…
It costs an average of $1.55 per Canadian each year to support the Monarchy in Canada. This money does not go to the routine expenses of the Queen, but rather to the offices of the Governor General and Lieutenant Governor. Contrary to public rumors, at no time do Canadians "pay money" to Britain or to the Royal Family.
The simple answer is No.
Nowadays one of his main sources of income is via the Duchy of Cornwall, which made profits of $26 million in 2020 and $24 million in 2021. According to Bloomberg, William will now earn $24 million a year from the Duchy of Cornwall.
Occupied Royal Palaces, such as Buckingham Palace, are not the private property of The Queen. They are occupied by the Sovereign and held in trust by Crown Estates for future generations. The Queen privately owns two properties, Balmoral Castle and Sandringham House, which are not publicly funded.
Why can't Canada leave the monarchy?
Countries without monarchies, like the U.S. and France, are known as republics. For Canada to sever its longstanding ties to the monarchy and become a republic, it would require agreement between the House of Commons, the Senate and all 10 provinces.
The monarchy plays two roles in Canada: constitutional and ceremonial. Much of Canada's Constitution is based on unwritten customs and traditions. The Queen possesses emergency powers that are there to be used by the Crown if need be, such as refusing royal assent or dismissing a government.
Half of Canadians (51%) believe that the monarchy in Canada is outdated and does not have a place in the 21st century. On the other hand, 33% believe that it is an important part of our history, and we should preserve this heritage.
While it may have been colonized by both the British and the French, Canada has been an independent country since 1867. So, if you're asking whether Canada is more American or British, the answer is neither. It's Canadian.
The Crown land is really public land
While Queen Elizabeth is mainly a legal figurehead in Canada, the vast majority of Crown Land in Canada is owned by the Crown as an institution. About half of the land is administered by the provincial governments and the rest by the federal government.
In 1841, the province of Canada, as a British colony, adopted the Canadian pound. In 1851, Canada passed legislation and the pound sterling was introduced.
The health system is funded mainly by provincial or territorial general tax revenue with some federal transfers and is free at the point of delivery for citizens. There is no cost-sharing for inpatient or outpatient care and prescription drug prices vary but are still inexpensive.
The Queen of Canada holds the legal title to all the “Crown Lands”. That makes up 89% of Canada. Currently Elizabeth is both Queen of the UK and Queen of Canada, but those are separate positions and could diverge in the future. So Elizabeth, who is the Queen of the UK, has title to 89% of Canada.
As one of the principal creators of the Commonwealth in the early 1930s, Canada had a special interest in it. With most British colonies gaining independence after World War II, a process of which Canadians in general approved, many newly independent countries applied for membership in the Commonwealth.
Less than 11% of Canada's land is in private hands; 41% is federal crown land and 48% is provincial crown land. The YUKON, the NORTHWEST TERRITORIES and NUNAVUT are administered on behalf of Canada by ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS AND NORTHERN DEVELOPMENT through the Territorial Lands Act and Public Lands Grants Act.
What would happen to the Crown Estate if the monarchy was abolished?
Technically the crown estate is owned by the royal family. If the monarchy was abolished peacefully, they'd either get to keep their estate, or the state would buy it from them. If it was abolished by force, they'd get nothing, and would be lucky to keep their lives.
What is the real purpose of a monarchy like in the UK today? In the UK, the monarchy is meant to be a unifying figure, one that is above the politics, one that people can look up to, regardless of age, sex, gender, ethnicity, etc.
UK taxes are generally higher than in the US. Depending on where you live and how much you earn, UK personal income taxes can reach rates as high as 45% — significantly higher than the top US income tax rate of 37%. UK capital gains tax rates, meanwhile, top out at 28% while US capital gains tax rates max out at 20%.
As of 2024, there are 15 Commonwealth realms: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, and the United Kingdom.
Though the Queen does not privately own the Crown Estate, this portion of the public sovereign entity pays for the Queen and her family's expenses each year. In recent years, the Queen's yearly income amassed from this estate has amounted to roughly $18 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
