Nairobi Water Announces New Prices & Penalties (2024)

Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) announced new water tariffs for city residents that will be applicable for the next two years.

In a gazette notice dated Friday, February 3, the agency noted that the charges would be applied per cubic meter. One cubic meter is equal to 1,000 litres.

Residential units using between one to six cubic meters (1,000-6,000 litres) will be charged Ksh45 for each 1,000 litre. Those who use between seven and 20 cubic meters will be charged Ksh 67, while 21 to 50 cubic meters will be charged Ksh70.

Consumption of 51,000 to 100,000 litres will be charged at Ksh76 per 1000 litres, and those using 101,000 - 300,000 litres will pay Ksh78 per 1,000 litres.

Those who use above 300,000 litres of water will attract a tariff of Ksh 80 per cubic meter( 1000 litres).

"Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) has determined an upward tariff review for NCWSC is justified in order to improve service delivery, operate sustainably and protect consumer interests by meeting the tariff conditions attached to the tariff," read the statement in part.

Multi-dwelling Units and gather units will be charged Ksh67 per 1,000 litres. On the other hand, water will be supplied to kiosks will have a tariff of Ksh22 per 1,000 litres.

Schools and universities will pay a tariff of Ksh50 per litre for 1- 600 cubic meters. 601 - 1200 cubic meters will be charged at Ksh55, as any amount above 1200 cubic meters will go for Ksh60.

Government and commercial entities will be charged differently as one to 50 cubic meters will attract a tariff of Ksh67 per 1000 litres, and 51 to 100 cubic meters will be charged at Ksh76. Amounts above 300 cubic meters will be charged at Ksh 80

The agency added that any new water connection would be made at a fee of Ksh2,500, while water reconnection from the meter willcost Ksh1,000.

"Water Reconnection fee at mains will be charged Ksh5,000 and a double deposit," read the notice in part.

The sewer connection to residential houses was put at Ksh2,500 while those to schools, commercial, colleges and universities were out at Ksh5,000.

Those found to have illegally connected water to their homes will be fined Ksh30,000 plus estimated consumption during the period of the illegality.

Illegal water connection to commercial buildings and industries fine was put up at Ksh100,000.

Additionally, Self-reconnection after the cut-off for non-payment and tampering with meters will attract a fine of Ksh5,000.

"Surcharge for direct suction of water from the supply line using a pump will be Ksh10,000," read the notice in part.
